Naughty Queries that Google Instant Won't Suggest for You

It's easy enough to search on the Internet for George Carlin's famous riff on language. But good luck trying to use Google Instant to search for some of the words the late, great comedian mentioned in his monologue.

In its latest search technology upgrade, Google Instant follows a precedent set by its predecessor when it comes to suggesting search terms as people type in the search box. As Danny Sullivan, from the blog SearchEngineLand.com, notes, Google Instant will omit suggestions for words that it considers pornographic. But also keep in mind the following:

Google Instant makes that policy even more important, since now rather than just suggesting search topics, Google automatically loads search results to match the suggested queries as you type. Imagine a teacher doing a search in front of a class of children, looking for information about fuchsias. "Fuc...." they start to type, only to find Google automatically bringing up results for another and far more popular search topic that begins with those letters.

But this is more complicated than it might seem at first blush. Sullivan points to the recent news concerning supermodel Jerry Hall and her plans to auction a painting done by artist Lucien Freud. The painting depicts her her nude and pregnant. Turns out that Google will not suggest "Jerry Hall nude," though it does "automatically bring back results for "Jerry Hall," after you type just "Jerry H," which shows the painting in question, Sullivan noted. A similar strike three comes up when searching for actress Demi Moore as either nude or naked. Just in case you'd forgotten, Moore posed naked while in the latter stages of pregnancy for the cover photo which appeared on Vanity Fair in 1991.
