Mukasey Will Recuse Himself From Giuliani-related Matters

Under questioning from Leahy, Mukasey told the Judiciary Committee he will have nothing to do with any matter related to Rudy Giuliani. Mukasey served with the former New York City mayor and current GOP presidential candidate in the U.S. attorney's office in New York, and Mukasey's son works at Giuliani's law firm, Bracewell & Giuliani.

When asked by Leahy whether "it is safe to say" that Mukasey agreed that it was.

"I'm saying it too," Mukasey added. "No ambiguity."

Mukasey also said that partisan political objectives would never play a role in any investigation of elected officials, and he stated that he would tightly control what senior political appointees would have access to have access to that information.

Mukasey also agreed that the Justice Department should use extreme caution in bringing charges against any sitting politician close to an election.

"Partisan politics should not be part of the bringing of charges or the timing of charges," Mukasey said.
