Mukasey On Rove, Porn And Passport Snooping
Testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Attorney General Michael Mukasay faces a variety of questions and challenges. Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) presses Mukasey on the investigation into the prosecution of former Alabama Gov. Donald Siegelman. The Office of Professional Responsibility is looking into whether the Democratic governor was improperly and selectively prosecuted for political reasons, perhaps with the involvement of former White House adviser Karl Rove. Schumer tells him that if the allegations are true, then it’s “like the justice department in a banana republic."
Schumer tries to pull details of the investigation out of Mukasey but is unsuccessful. Mukasey tells him he has the resources he needs and “I have no reason to believe anyone’s slow rolling.” He won’t specify precisely when the investigation will be complete but says “I have every reason to believe that it will” be finished before President Bush leaves office.
