More Services From New Cell Phones
Gadget-loving Hong Kongers now have another toy at their disposal as third-generation, or 3G, cell phones went on sale Tuesday for the first time in the territory.
Hutchison Telecommunications (Hong Kong) Ltd. was offering an NEC c616 model priced at 4,380 Hong Kong dollars ($560 U.S.), or a discounted HK$3,980 ($510) each for a pair. Service plans start at HK$263 ($34) a month.
The term 3G refers to mobile phone technologies that provide services such as high-speed Internet access, teleconferencing and music services.
Its steep price tag didn't deter wealthy and technologically savvy Hong Kongers.
"Cell phones with cameras are just as expensive," said Kenny Cheng as he picked up two handsets at Hutchison's downtown showroom.
"With 3G, my wife and I can see what each other are doing," said the 44-year-old Cheng.
Hutchison Telecom spokeswoman Teresa Lok said Tuesday the initial response in Hong Kong was "good," but declined to provide exact figures.
Three other Hong Kong operators are licensed to offer 3G — SmarTone Telecommunications Holdings, Sunday Communications Ltd. and Hong Kong CSL Ltd., owned by Australia's Telstra Corp. None have launched yet.
Hutchison already has introduced 3G in Britain, Italy, Australia, Sweden and Austria. It said last month it has about 666,000 subscribers worldwide, but the operation has yet to turn a profit.
