Mom who stole $19,000 from cheerleading squad going to jail
PITTSBURGH - A Pittsburgh-area mother who is a self-described "shopaholic" was sentenced to a month in jail after apologizing for the theft of more than $19,000 from a cheerleading squad, CBS Pittsburgh reported.
Investigators contend that over two years, Mary Schneir, the former president of the Bethel Park Junior Cheerleaders, made multiple unauthorized cash withdrawals from the Hawkettes' bank account using an ATM.
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, on Thursday Schneir, 42, pleaded guilty to theft by unlawful taking.
"A month in jail and the remainder of her sentence will be on house arrest," said Phil DiLucente, Schneir's defense attorney.
According to CBS Pittsburgh, DiLucente indicated that Schneir is being treated for depression.
Saying they are pleased with Schneir's sentence, the cheerleading group's board issued a statement that said, in part, "It is our hope that today's sentence will deter others from doing this to other organizations in the future."Schneir's attorney said his client hopes that after she serves her time in the Allegheny County Jail that friends will continue to support her.
