Mom Dies Trying To Rescue Son
A mother who saved one son from a strong ocean current off the island of Kauai died after she was pulled from the ocean during a failed attempt to save another son.
Thirty-two-year-old Jennifer White of Gunnison, Colo., brought her 8-year-old son to shore, then swam back into the water to attempt a rescue of her 9-year-old boy.
"In a matter of a short amount of time, the current swept them very quickly down the beach," her husband, Chris White, told the Honolulu Advertiser. "… Jen was struggling to stay up."
White lost consciousness and suffered injuries during the effort.
A bystander rescued White, who was in critical condition until she died.
Authorities say scuba divers and other rescuers went looking for the older child. They also are looking for a 17-year-old missing since Saturday in a separate incident.
A Coast Guard spokeswoman says waves were in the eight-foot range with winds blowing at about 20 miles per hour on Monday.
