Mom caught on video with knife to infant's neck gets 3 years in Ill. prison

CBS

(CBS) - A 34-year-old woman from suburban Chicago caught on video holding a knife to her infant's neck was sentenced to 3 years in prison Wednesday.

Tanika Bryant was convicted of aggravated domestic violence for the May 2010 incident, reports the Chicago Tribune.

During a video chat Tanika's husband Jesse Bryant, a soldier stationed in South Korea, reportedly recorded her holding a large kitchen knife to their baby's neck. He immediately informed military police, who notified authorities in Bensenville, Ill. where Tanika and the child were living.

An officer sent to his wife's apartment found the child in his mother's arms, says the Tribune.

The recording, which was played in court, reportedly showed Tanika Bryant dropping the child, who disappeared from view.

When her husband asked about the child, she responded, "You don't see him, do you?"

Before the conversation Jesse said he felt that "something was wrong, something was off," said Assistant State's Attorney Anne Therieau.

Last month, Tanika Bryant pleaded guilty but mentally ill, the Tribune reports.

DuPage County court records say Tanika suffers from depression and was concerned about financial difficulties and her husband being overseas.
