Police say Gabriella Russo was last seen leaving her Battery Park City residence in lower Manhattan at about 9:15 a.m. Tuesday. She was with her nanny, 55-year-old Fatima Alexander, who was supposed to drop the child off at school, according to police. They never showed up, reports CBS New York.

The nanny reportedly returned the child overnight, after the girl had been missing for around 15 hours. Police say Alexander has been charged with kidnapping, endangering the welfare of a child and unlawful imprisonment, the station reports.

Investigators told the station that Alexander spent the day riding the subways across Manhattan with the child, and took her to Central Park. Images of the two were captured on surveillance video. When a 1010 WINS reporter asked Alexander where they had been, the woman replied, "nowhere."

The girl's aunt Rebecca Russo said Alexander had been working for the family for 15 years.

Investigators are still trying to determine a motive.
