Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft reportedly said tests are needed to be sure whether the remains are truly hers.

Shunick vanished on May 19, days before her 22nd birthday. The University of Louisiana-Lafayette student was last seen riding away from a friend's house on her bicycle.

Police spokesman Cpl. Paul Mouton said a property is being investigated in connection with Shunick's disappearance, but the location won't be released while the investigation continues.

Brandon Lavergne, a 33-year-old registered sex offender was charged with both her kidnapping and murder, as well with the 1999 death of Lisa Ann Pate. Court filings say Lavergne may have moved both bodies.
