Michael White, Calif. felony drug suspect, swims for seven hours to avoid arrest, report says
(CBS) SAN DIEGO - Authorities arrested a man early Monday morning off the San Diego coast after he swam for seven hours to avoid getting caught, according to CBS affiliate KFMB.
According to the station the incident started around 10 p.m. Sunday. A police officer reportedly approached the suspect, John Michael White, 46, to make an arrest on a outstanding warrant on a felony drug charge. White reportedly fled into the water and swam for about 2.5 miles to Silver Strand Beach.
Different units were reportedly mobilized to capture White from the water, including K-9 units, divers and a helicopter patrol. During the 7-hour standoff, the suspect allegedly told authorities he would "kill" anyone that came near him.
The shirtless man was finally arrested at 5 a.m. after a dive team captured him. He was taken into custody and treated for hypothermia, reports KFMB.
According to the station, officials said it was a narcotics-related incident and he is known by police for past episodes.
