(CBS/AP) ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. - Rahsaan Thedford could face up to 10 years in jail for allegedly biting off his estranged wife's eyelid and chasing her with steak knife during a Mother's Day argument at her suburban Detroit home.

The Detroit Free Press reports that the 32-year-old Clinton Township man's arraignment on assault with intent to maim is scheduled for June 13 in Macomb Circuit Court.

Police said the argument began May 8 when the woman told Thedford to leave. The woman told police she was punched in the face and that one of her eyelids then was bitten off.

The man from Macomb County's Clinton Township was arrested a block away trying to climb a fence.

"I find this crime absolutely heinous," St. Clair Shores Police Detective Margaret Eidt told the newspaper. "In 18 years of being a police officer and detective, this is the first time I've ever seen a case like this."

The couple separated after the woman's 17-year-old daughter was assaulted this year. Thedford faces a misdemeanor assault charge in that case.
