| Incumbent | John Engler (R) |
Opponent | Geoffrey Fieger (D) |
| Race outlook | Strong Republican |
| When controversial lawyer Geoffrey Fieger won an upset victory in the Democratic primary last August, no one could predict how it would affect the reelection campaign of incumbent Governor John Engler. Fieger's populist style, personal wealth and unpredictability promised to shake up the race. But it has become abundantly clear that even many Democrats are unomfortable with the fiery Fieger, and Engler should be easily re-elected.
This campaign has been about personality, not issues. Shortly after Labor Day, Engler began running ads wooing independents and Democrats who had supported other candidates in the primary. "We want to keep Michigan in the mainstream, not extreme," he told voters. The Michigan GOP ran ads more directly critical of Fieger and accused him of religious bigotry. Fieger, a trial lawyer best known for representing Jack Kevorkian, has tried to cast himself as a fighter for the people, but his inflammatory rhetoric has offended many. He has flung personal insults at Engler as much as he has criticized his policies. One of his more recent ads calls Engler a chicken for refusing to debate, but Engler has been pursuing a Rose Garden strategy and done his best to ignore his opponent.
