Mental Illness, Or Murder?

Tanya Hudson seemed bright and responsible. She was well-liked, and she had grown up in a stable middle-class family. But last year, Hudson, then 24, was indicted for allegedly committing a horrible crime -- killing her newborn baby. She claims the child was stillborn, but Florida prosecutors say the medical evidence shows the baby was alive at birth.

This kind of crime --neonaticide -- is more common than is generally believed, according to some experts. But are these cases a matter of murder, or of mental stability?

While prosecutors argue that these young women have taken the lives of defenseless infants, some psychologists and other experts counter that these women were, at least temporarily, mentally unstable, and as such, not responsible for their actions.

Our correspondents will take you inside several cases, talk with experts, and introduce you to Debbe Magnusen, a California woman who has started a group designed to help young women who may be in danger of abandoning their newborns.
