Meggett Charged With Sexual Assault

New England Patriots running back David Meggett was arrested today on suspicion of sexual assault and robbery, Toronto police said.

Meggett, 31, was arrested along with Steven Brannon, 29, of New York, who was to be charged with sexual assault, said Sgt. David Muscat.

Police said the two men assaulted a 33-year-old woman after she arranged to meet one of the men, whom they did not identify, at the Royal York Hotel in downtown Toronto at 1 a.m.

When they went to a suite in the hotel, another man entered the room.

"There are evidentiary issues here," said police spokeswoman Sgt. Marilyn McCann. "They have been charged with sexual assault jointly. I believe that will explain how the situation developed."

No other details were available of the incident, but police said the woman called for help and was later released from Woman's College Hospital after being treated for minor injuries.

Police said the woman knew one of the men.

Both men were held pending a hearing later today at Old City Hall Court.

Muscat said Brannon was believed to be trying out for the Dragons football team of Barcelona, Spain.

Meggett, the all-time leading punt returner in NFL history, missed the end of the New England Patriots season because of injuries.

The 5-foot-7, 190-pound back joined the team in 1995 after playing with the New York Giants.
