McCain Weighs in on Weekend Debates

(CBS)
From CBS News' Dante Higgins:

John McCain chatted with reporters about his impressions of the two Republican debates in New Hampshire over the weekend.

"I thought the debate went well last night. I thought the format was fine and obviously the smaller the number you have, the more you get in."

At last night's debate, which aired on Fox News Channel, all the candidates sat at one desk. McCain sat next to Mitt Romney with whom he had exchanged some intense jabs with over immigration and negative ads at Saturday night's debate.

"It's fine. Look, we are not unfriendly and everybody thinks there's some kind of animosity there. As I've said many times, I don't know him very well. I've always been cordial to him and he has been to me," McCain explained.

McCain said he thought the ABC debate on Saturday night also went well but he noted that he didn't like sitting at the small desk they placed him behind. He laughed, saying he felt sorry for Fred Thompson who's 6-foot-6 and had to cramp his long legs under his desk.

ABC's debate featured some fireworks between McCain and Romney on attack ads and McCain joked, "It's no secret" that he has a bit of a combative nature.

He admitted to adjusting his demeanor for last night's debate saying, "I wasn't going to get into it last night…It's not helpful" he said.

"I think I made my point on immigration and taxes…people will make their judgment about the 'negative advertisements.'"
