McCain Was In Her Prayers

Twenty-seven years ago, a Catholic nun named Sister Mary Leanne acquired a POW bracelet to show her support for American prisoners of war in Vietnam. For several years, she prayed for the man whose name appeared on the bracelet. A lieutenant commander named John McCain.

"The bracelet says Lt. Cmdr. John McCain the third," says Sister Mary Leanne, of Regina High School in Harper Woods, Mich. "On the next line it says 10/26/67, which was the day he was shot down."

When she was a young teacher in the 1960's, the draft was on and there were a number of students in her class with family members who were fighting in the Vietnam conflict.

"It was a kind of a show of support that was going on in the country at that time, I participated in it. At that time, John McCain was only a name to me," she told CBS News Early Show co-anchor Jane Clayson on Friday morning.

She wore the bracelet for three or four years straight, she says, praying for the missing man she'd never seen.

The sister got to meet McCain personally this week, and offered him the bracelet.

"He was very warm. Very kind and personable. I wanted to return the bracelet to him," she said.

But McCain wanted her to keep it. He did invite Sister Mary Leanne to the inauguration to the White House, should the Arizona Senator win the election in November.
