From CBS News' John Bentley:
(BURBANK, CALIF.) – Age was the topic of discussion on the "Tonight Show" today when John McCain stopped by to chat with Jay Leno. While talking about his work in Washington, McCain harkened back to his Revolutionary War days. "You forgot to mention when I warned the people about the British coming," he said to laughter from the audience.
McCain will turn 72 Friday, a fact which did not escape Leno's notice. "We were going to have a cake, but the fire marshal said that many candles..." he said, trailing off to laughter. "Does it ever bother you?"
Not enough that he wouldn't joke about it. "My Social Security number is eight," he said.
Leno also asked McCain about who he might pick for his running mate. "Wouldn't it be good to have a person you don't know what party they're with, they have no political principles whatsoever, they may need a job about that time," McCain said, alluding to Leno's contract with NBC ending in the fall.
But don't print up the McCain/Leno bumper stickers just yet. "I can make more doing a week in Vegas," Leno responded.
The full interview airs on "The Tonight Show" later this evening.
