McCain Camp Vetting Cantor As Running Mate

Virginia Rep. Eric Cantor, the chief deputy minority whip in the House, has been asked by the McCain campaign for personal documents so they can look into the possibility of Cantor becoming McCain's running mate, the Associated Press reports.

Cantor and the McCain campaign wouldn't comment on the report, but the AP says a "Republican familiar with the conversations between Cantor and the McCain campaign said Cantor has been asked to turn over documents," though the source did not have specifics.

Cantor has been a strong McCain surrogate during the campaign, often offering harsh words about presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama. He is a pro-business representative from Virginia – a key swing-state and the home of potential Obama running mate Tim Kaine – though he is largely unknown outside the state.

Cantor, who is Jewish, has been a strong supporter of Israel. He is well liked by conservatives, a group McCain has had trouble shoring up.
