Mass. mom gives birth on bathroom floor after hospital sends her home

Nativia Jones spent part of New Year's Eve in a hospital in New Bedford, Mass., thinking she was going into labor, but doctors sent her home.

Jones ended up giving birth later that night on her bathroom floor, CBS Boston affiliate WBZ reports.

New Bedford Police Officer Nathan Monteiro responded to the woman's 911 call.

"I was kind of hoping that the medics had arrived on scene before I got there. It was really one of those situations you don't encounter too often," Monteiro said.

Little Amyiah Angel Jones-Rivera was born three hours into 2013, just three days before Jones was scheduled to have a C-section.

"I was in the bathroom, and was almost in shock," Jones said. "The baby was coming, and my boyfriend was about to pass out, but he did call 911."

Monteiro entered the bathroom just in time to catch the baby and noticed the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck.

"So I just unwrapped it, then used a finger to clear the airway," he said. The baby started crying on her own.

The police officer was reunited with mother and baby at St. Luke's hospital on Thursday, WBZ reports.
