(CBS) Mary Tyler Moore has elected to undergo brain surgery, her rep told People magazine on Thursday.

The surgery is to remove a meningioma, a benign tumor of the lining tissue of the brain.

"At the recommendation of her neurologist, who has been monitoring this for years, and a neurosurgeon, Mary decided to proceed with this fairly routine procedure," the rep told the magazine.

Moore, 73, best known for her roles in the '60s and '70s on "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," most recently guest-starred on TV Land's "Hot in Cleveland," which stars her "Mary Tyler Moore Show" co-star Betty White.

She also makes a surprise appearance on Thursday's episode of "The Rachael Ray Show," during an interview with former co-star Dick Van Dyke. The episode was filmed on May 5, according to the report.
