BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (CBS/AP) Add actor Mark Ruffalo to the ranks of upstate New York residents opposed to natural gas drilling using the hydraulic fracturing process.

Ruffalo was among the speakers Monday at a public forum held at Binghamton University in suburban Vestal. About 400 people, most of them students, heard Ruffalo and others speak out against the process known as fracking, during which millions of gallons of water, chemicals and sand are pumped deep underground to reach natural gas deposits.

Opponents say fracking contaminates water wells.

Ruffalo lives in Sullivan County, which is in the Northeast's Marcellus Shale, believed to contain vast deposits of natural gas.

Ruffalo's film's include "Shutter Island" and "The Kids Are All Right." He was recently cast to play the Hulk in "The Avengers."
