Manhunt for cop killer in Louisiana

SHREVEPORT, La. -- Police in this northwest Louisiana city say an officer shot while on duty Wednesday night has died, and a manhunt for a suspect is underway.

Shreveport Police Cpl. Marcus Hines said at a press conference late Wednesday that the officer was shot while responding to a report of a suspicious person or prowler inside a home. Hines says an armed man was apparently inside the residence, threatening to harm people.

Hines said Shreveport police, Caddo County deputies and canines are searching for a male suspect.

Police later said they believe they know who the suspect is and are obtaining a warrant for his arrest.

More than six dozen police units were on the scene, and a DeSoto Parish helicopter was being used in the search, reports CBS Shreveport affiliate KSLA, adding that a Special Response Team was at a home. There was no word on whether the gunman was believed to be inside.

Officers were called to the 3500 block of Del Rio Street just after 9:00 p.m. Wednesday for a call of a suspicious person or prowler.

The Caddo Parish Constable's Office posted a message on its Facebook page saying, "May God bless the family of the SPD officer that lost his life tonight serving our city. Please keep this officer's family in your prayers tonight as well as our law enforcement. He died protecting us."

Shreveport Mayor Ollie Tyler emailed a statement saying, "Last night, we lost one of our brave, uniformed officers in the line of duty. Our hearts are saddened. We ask for the community's prayers for this officer's family and SPD as we grieve the loss of one of our own who paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving and protecting the citizens of this city."
