(CBS/KVOR/AP) MANTECA, Calif. -This is probably not the best way to solve an argument with your wife.

A Manteca, Calif. man who confessed to driving 51 miles - at speeds of up to 100mph - with his wife clinging to the hood of his minivan, will spend five years in prison.

Somehow, she survived.

Christopher Carroll, 26, pleaded guilty Wednesday to attempted murder and spousal abuse as part of a deal with prosecutors, who downgraded the attempted murder count from first to second degree.

Authorities say the incident stemmed from an argument and that Carroll's wife Rebecca, 25, jumped on the hood of the van as he tried to drive away.

Rebecca said in court that her husband swerved through freeway traffic to throw her off the van and turned up the music to drown out her screams. Carroll drove at speeds near 100mph and the victim told CBS affiliate KVOR that it was a "miracle" she managed to hold on.

Carroll's wife miraculously endured with only a bout of hypothermia.
