Man lying in road run over by police cruiser in Mass.

CHATHAM, Mass. - A student who was lying in the road was run over and apparently killed by a Chatham, Mass. police cruiser early Thursday morning, reports CBS Boston.

Police say the police cruiser was responding to an emergency call just after 4 a.m. on New Year's Day when it ran over something lying in the road. According to police, the officer at the wheel immediately stopped, noticed it was a person, and called for assistance.

Police identified the victim as 22-year-old Garrett Gagne of Longmeadow. Police don't know why Gagne was lying in the roadway or what his condition was before the accident.

Gagne was a senior lacrosse player for St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y.

According to police, Gagne was in Chatham to celebrate New Year's Eve with friends.

The officer's name has not been released.
