Man gets 27 years to life for machete attack on roommates
(CBS/AP) TORRANCE, Calif. - A Southern California man was sentenced Friday to 27 years to life in prison for a machete attack last year that left one of his roommates dead and another seriously injured.
Carlos Arias Donis was convicted last month on one count each of second-degree murder, attempted murder and aggravated mayhem with a special allegation of causing great bodily injury.
Prosecutors say the 26-year-old gardener attacked two of his roommates with a machete shortly after 1 a.m. on Aug. 25, 2010. Fernando Garcia died at the scene while the second victim received serious head injuries.
Sheriff's deputies arrested Donis after he fled the scene.
