Man faces DUI charges after driving Jeep onto Philadelphia Airport runway

(CBS) PHILADELPHIA - Police say an intoxicated 24-year-old in an SUV crashed through a security gate and drove onto two runways at Philadelphia International Airport on Thursday morning.

Investigators say the incident began at about 11 a.m. when a Jeep Cherokee driven by Kenneth Mazik crashed through a chain-link fence surrounding the airport. The high-speed chase down the runway was captured by ground radar and controllers.

CBS Philly reports Mazik drove around the airport for several minutes before police were able to stop the car and take him into custody. He was taken to a local hospital for a psychiatric evaluation and now faces DUI charges. Federal charges are also possible.

Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Joe Sullivan says police have no motive so far.

"We're trying to determine that right now," Sullivan said. "Whether or not he has psychological problems or substance abuse problems, that's all part of the investigation."

Police found no explosives in the vehicle and Sullivan stresses that authorities believe this is an isolated incident with no link to terrorism.

The airport was shutdown for approximately 30 minutes as police investigated. When it reopened, incoming flights were delayed. However, all flights are back on schedule, airport officials said.
