Man Charged In High-Profile Hit-And-Run
A Connecticut man has been charged with manslaughter in a hit-and-run accident in Hartford last year that fueled a debate about the city's morality because of a video showing people ignoring the victim.
Hartford police said they arrested 33-year-old Luis Negron of Hartford on a first-degree manslaughter charge Friday, the same day as the funeral of the victim, Angel Arce Torres.
The accident in May 2008 left Torres paralyzed and mute. He died Monday at the age of 79 after relatives gave approval to take him off life support.
Negron was arraigned in state court Friday and ordered held in lieu of $700,000 bond. He did not enter a plea.
Negron's lawyers say the arrest warrant is based only on circumstantial evidence and hearsay.
