Man arrested after David Letterman show theater break-in

(CBS/WCBS/AP) NEW YORK - Police say they have arrested a man on charges of burglary and criminal mischief in connection with a break-in at the New York City theater where David Letterman tapes his television show.

The break-in happened around 7 a.m. Sunday. A passerby called police to report a burglary at the historic Ed Sullivan Theater on Broadway. James Whittemore, 22, of Manhattan was taken into custody.

Cops say he was drunk, according to CBS station WCBS. He was taken to the hospital to be treated for cuts.

A metal bar on the glass doors at the Broadway entrance to the theater was pried open and the glass was smashed. Trash cans and the stanchions for velvet ropes inside the lobby were knocked over. The vestibule was also reportedly damaged.

Whittemore's roommates had very little to say about the incident.

"It's definitely a surprise, but we don't want to talk about it," one roommate told CBS station WCBS. 

CBS and Worldwide Pants said the show's set was undamaged and that the show would be taping as usual on Monday.
