Man allegedly stabs grandmother with broom, police say

(CBS) LOS ANGELES -- A man was arrested in South Los Angeles after he allegedly stabbed his grandmother to death with a broken broom inside her home.

Los Angeles station KTLA reports he then barricaded himself inside a shed on the property.

Police were called to the home around 2 p.m. Tuesday and found 89-year-old Ethel Porter, who was then taken to the hospital where she later died of her injuries.

The 42-year-old suspect, believed to be the woman's grandson, was eventually talked out of leaving the shed by authorities and was arrested at the scene.

ABC affiliate KABC reports the man's sister, Anika Simpson Richardson, said her brother has a history of taking drugs and may have been hallucinating when he picked up a broom and stabbed his grandmother in the chest.

"As I got over here, my mom told me my brother was hallucinating," said Richardson. "He had said 'My head had been shot off.' He had said that somebody else was killed, and he just picked up a broom and just started stabbing her, stabbing her in her chest. She was already elderly, she lost a lot of blood."

Police have yet to recover the murder weapon.
