Mahoney's Lawyer Defends Client To The AP

The lawyer for embattled Rep. Tim Mahoney defended his client on Wednesday, providing the AP with documentation that he says will exonerate the Florida Democrat.

Attorney Gary Isaacs allowed the AP to view several financial documents, hoping to prove that Mahoney paid his alleged mistress out of his own funds and not out of any campaign coffers.

According to Isaacs, Mahoney used his own money to pay Patricia Allen and her attorneys $121,000 when she threatened to file a lawsuit after Mahoney fired her from his campaign staff.

Isaacs showed the Associated Press canceled checks and wire transfers from Mahoney's personal account to him. Isaacs also provided documentation that shows the money was then sent to Allen's attorney to resolve the issue.

Both the AP and the Palm Beach Post reported that the FBI is investigating the matter, citing unnamed sources.
