Lori Stilley, NJ woman, accused of scamming friends and family by faking cancer

(CBS/AP) MOUNT HOLLY, N.J.- Lori Stilley, a New Jersey woman, is accused of scamming relatives and others out of cash, meals and even a wedding by falsely claiming she had bladder cancer. 

The Burlington County prosecutor has charged Stilley, 40, with theft by deception.

According to officials, in February 2011 Stilley told friends and family and posted on Facebook that she had been diagnosed with cancer. In April, she allegedly claimed her condition had worsened and that she did not have medical insurance.

In response, officials say, family and friends organized and paid for her wedding, raised more than $10,000, and delivered meals to the 'cancer patient'.

Supporters became suspicious in November 2011 after she posted that she believed a miracle was coming and was feeling better.

Prosecutor Robert Bernardi calls the scam "extremely cruel."

Stilley is free on $25,000 bail.
