Lil Wayne Plea Deal: Different State, Different Charge, Same Plea...Guilty
YUMA, Ariz. (CBS/AP) Rap star Lil Wayne has entered into a plea agreement in Arizona with Yuma County prosecutors in order to avoid jail time on drug and weapon charges.
During the 27-year-old's change of plea hearing Friday, the Young Money artist appeared via video from a New York jail and pleaded guilty to one charge of possession of a dangerous drug.
The charge stems from an incident in January 2008 in which his tour bus was stopped at a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint near Dateland, 78 miles east of Yuma.
Authorities boarded the bus and say they found cocaine, Ecstasy, and a handgun on it.
Prosecutors say the Grammy winner, whose real name is Dwayne Carter, could receive 36 months probation.
Lil Wayne is currently serving an eight-month jail term in New York after admitting in October 2009 to having a loaded, .40-caliber semiautomatic weapon on his tour bus.
His sentencing hearing is scheduled for June 30, but there is always a chance that Lil Wayne, whose New York sentencing was delayed by dental work and a courthouse fire (separate events), has a couple postponements in his future.
