Lawrence Phillips Arrested... Again

Lawrence Phillips, whose NFL career foundered amid repeated disciplinary problems and violent behavior, has been arrested on charges of assaulting his girlfriend.

Phillips was arrested Saturday on a felony assault charge and carrying a loaded weapon in a vehicle, a misdemeanor, said police Sgt. Kirk West. He was in jail Tuesday night in lieu of $500,000 bail.

Police were first called to a Beverly Hills home about 4 a.m. Saturday, and officers said they found Phillips' girlfriend had been attacked. Phillips was arrested when he returned home around noon.

West said the girlfriend was given first-aid at the scene and declined more extensive medical treatment.

Phillips, the sixth overall pick by the St. Louis Rams in the 1996 draft, was suspended for insubordination, then released at the end of last season by the San Francisco 49ers, his third NFL club. The 25-year-old running back has a history of run-ins with the law dating to his college days as a star at Nebraska.

He was released by the Miami Dolphins after he was charged with hitting a woman at a Plantation, Fla., nightclub. He later pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor battery charge and was sentenced to probation.

While in college he was charged with domestic violence for beating his ex-girlfriend and sentenced to probation.
