Nancy made nice.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi, whose fire-breathing, anti-Bush speech on Monday was cited by some Republicans as a reason for the bill’s defeat on Monday, was valedictory, bipartisan and focused on stopping Democratic defections in her closing speech just now.
“We must reassure the American people that this crisis will lead to reforms that will strengthen their economic futures,” said Pelosi, who made a point of thanking pay-as-you-go Blue Dog Democrat John Tanner, whose caucus remains a source of concern on the upcoming vote.
“It is paid for – it is paid for,” she said of tax extenders added by the Senate. “No new deficit spending must be our mantra.”
