1 killed in Kentucky State University shooting; suspect identified as parent of student, authorities say
A 19-year-old Kentucky State University student was killed and another was critically wounded Tuesday in a shooting at the campus in Frankfort, officials said.
The slain student was identified Wednesday as De'Jon Fox, 19. The suspect, who was arrested by university police immediately at the scene of the shooting, was identified as Jacob Lee Bard of Evansville, Indiana, according to city officials.
Bard is a parent of a Kentucky State student, Frankfort Assistant Chief of Police Scott Tracy said Wednesday at a news conference. He was charged with murder and assault in the first degree, Tracy said.
Tracy said it was too early to say what led up to the shooting that occurred outside the Young Hall student dormitory on the south side of the school's campus.
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and Tracy described the shooting as an isolated incident.
"This was not a mass shooting or a random incident," the governor said in a video statement Tuesday.
The wounded student, who had not been identified, was taken to a local hospital in critical condition and remained in intensive care on Wednesday, Tracy said.
The Frankfort Police Department said it responded to an "active aggressor" on the campus around 3:35 p.m. Tuesday. The campus was put on lockdown but has since been secured, officials said.
"As a parent, I cannot imagine receiving the call I placed today to the parents," Kentucky State President Koffi C. Akakpo said Tuesday. "Our students need prayers. Kentucky State University needs prayers."
This was the second shooting at Kentucky State this year. In August, two students were shot near Young Hall when a passenger vehicle opened fire on a group of people walking on campus, police said. One victim was treated for minor injuries and the second for serious injuries. Police said at the time that no further information would be released but that an investigation was ongoing.
