Katy Perry named MTV's 2011 artist of the year
(CBS) Katy Perry has been named MTV's Artist of the Year, beating out Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Rihanna and Lil Wayne.
"I wasn't really allowed to watch MTV growing up, so this feels really validating," she said. "And I've had a fantastic year, a great tour and a great run, and you guys have been so a part of it and such a big reason why. So thank you so much. I really appreciate it."
Perry had a huge year, scoring five hit singles off her "Teenage Dream" album, including "E.T." and "The One That Got Away."
She went on a major tour, made an appearance in "The Smurfs" and hosted "Saturday Night Live." She also took home the MTV VMA video of the year award for "Firework."
Perry is up for two Grammys in 2012: record of the year and best pop solo performance for "Firework."
