Katie Couric's Notebook: We Are the World

It was 1985. Amadeus won the Oscar for best picture, the Mercury Sable hit the road for the first time, and Mikhail Gorbachev became the leader of the Soviet Union.

That same year, a group of celebrities came together to sing "We Are the World." It was a fundraising effort for Africa...particularly Ethiopia...where a million people had died of starvation and millions more were at risk.

The song raised 63 million dollars for relief efforts...but it raised something more important than that...awareness.

And now, 25 years later, another group of stars has made a new recording of We Are the World...this time to help the people of Haiti.

Some of them, like Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus, weren't even born in 1985. There is no more Soviet Union...or new Mercury Sables for that matter...but the power of music prevails.

It might be on iTunes instead of a record store, but the gift still makes a brighter day...so let's start giving.

That's a page from my notebook.

I'm Katie Couric, CBS News.
