The 16-year-old heartthrob will be up against rapper Drake, indie artists Mumford & Sons, Florence & The Machine and jazz artist Esperanza Spaulding.

The announcement was made as part of the Grammys' hour-long live nominations special from Club Nokia in Los Angeles.

Bieber appeared on the show via satellite from London.

"It feels amazing. I can't believe I'm in this position. Thank you to the fans," he said. "I don't know what to say."

Drake was eligible thanks to a change in requirements that allow previous nominees to be nominated for best new artist as long as they didn't win.

One name noticeably absent from the field was Ke$ha - even though her platinum debut album spawned a number of top hits.

The Grammys will be awarded on Sunday, Feb. 13, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and broadcast live on CBS.
