Jury selection in George Huguely murder trial set to begin on Monday

(CBS/AP) CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The trial of a former University of Virginia lacrosse player accused of killing his ex-girlfriend Yeardley Love is set to begin.

Jury selection is scheduled to start Monday in Virginia in the murder trial of George Huguely V, 24. He faces first-degree murder and several other charges in court. The jury selection is expected to take two days.

CBS Baltimore reports the jury will ultimately be asked to decide whether - as prosecution says - this was premeditated murder.

Love was a 22 year-old lacrosse player when she died of head injuries in May 2010. Police say she was killed by Huguely, who told investigators he kicked in Love's bedroom door and then shook her, causing her head to hit a wall several times.

However, Huguely's attorneys contend Love died accidentally from an irregular heartbeat caused partly by taking prescription Adderall and drinking alcohol.

In fact, Huguely's defense team says he didn't even know Love had died until he was told that by a detective.

The jury will hear that defense along with his lacrosse teammates describing him as very drunk the night Love died.

A wave of media is now descending on the college town where his murder trial is about to get underway.

"It's attention to a trial by the national media that we haven't seen here before," Rick Barrick, a University of Virginia spokesperson said.

Huguely has been in jail since the crime. He faces the possibility of a life sentence if he is convicted of first-degree murder.
