Julie Harris Hospitalized
Film and stage actress Julie Harris was in stable condition at a hospital Tuesday night after she was found semiconscious in her Chicago apartment, a local television station reported.
Harris, 75, who has won a record five Tony awards for best actress, was admitted to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, a nursing supervisor said.
The supervisor refused any other information about Harris. WGN-TV said the incident occurred over the weekend.
Harris is performing in a production of Claudia Allen's "Fossils" at the Victory Gardens Theater in Chicago. Harris plays a former schoolteacher who develops a deep attachment with a fellow female retiree.
Harris made her New York stage debut in 1945 in a production of "It's a Gift." Since then, she's won Tony's for her performances in "I Am a Camera," "The Lark," "Forty Carats," "The Last of Mrs. Lincoln" and "The Belle of Amherst."
Harris has performed in several films, including "The Haunting" and "East of Eden," in which she was cast opposite James Dean. She also has made several television movies.
