"The wheels have officially been set in motion to make that happen," Hamm told TVLine.com on Thursday. "It's a very exciting challenge that I'm looking forward to with a mixture of utter fear and excitement."
He's following in the footsteps of one of his co-stars. Last season, actor John Slattery directed two episodes of the award-winning drama series.
Production on the show's fifth season, which was delayed due to negotiations between AMC, Lionsgate and show creator Matthew Weiner, is set to begin in August, according to the report. Hamm's directing duties mean he'll head to work "a little early" to start prepping.
The show's fifth season will premiere in early 2012.
