John Warner Raises Only $500 In First Quarter Of '07
Sen. John Warner (R-Va.) raised only $500 in the last three months, stoking speculation once again that he might be headed for retirement, reports Politico's Carrie Budoff.
His office did not immediately return a phone call and e-mail requesting comment Thursday.
The 80-year-old senator has not yet announced whether he will seek a sixth term. However, the Richmond Times Dispatch has reported that Warner was planning his “first major fundraiser” in June.
Matthew Miller, a spokesman for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee said the minimal sum pointed to one conclusion: “That the rumor that has been going around for awhile that [Warner] is not running for re-election looks more and more true.”
Warner isn’t running on empty. He reported having $670,000 cash in the bank, according to the Federal Election Commission filing.
His only donor in the January 1 to March 31 reporting period was a homemaker from Gloucester, Va.
