It's not all business on official state trips.

Secretary of State John Kerry, clad in an orange hoodie, personally presented a birthday cake to CBS News' own Margaret Brennan, sharing a lighter moment with the press corps as they traveled to Paris after spending two days in Afghanistan.

The public affairs logistics team had the U.S. Embassy staff in Kabul prepare the birthday treat, then smuggled it aboard the helicopter to the airport and finally onto Kerry's plane.

Brennan initially thought Kerry was coming back for a briefing before the cake came out. The rest of the press corps was in on the plan. ("Was very cool of them," Brennan reports.)

It wasn't the first light moment of the day for Kerry, though. As Brennan reported earlier Tuesday, he bounced a soccer ball off his head and tossed it to Zahra Mahmoodi, the captain of the Afghan Women's National Soccer team, during a meeting at the embassy. Aside from meeting twice with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Kerry also spent time with prominent Afghan women, continuing his predecessor Hillary Clinton's efforts to spotlight women's rights issues in the war-torn country.
