(CBS/AP) PHOENIX - Prosecutors rested their case Thursday in the high-profile trial of Jodi Arias, who is accused of killing her boyfriend in 2008.

The state's last witness, a female friend of Arias, testified that she had dinner with Arias about 24 hours after the defendant allegedly killed 30-year-old Travis Alexander in his suburban Phoenix home.

Authorities say 32-year-old Arias stabbed and slashed Alexander nearly 30 times, slit his throat and shot him in the head at his Mesa home.

Arias claimed the killing was in self-defense. Prosecutors argued her actions were those of a jealous woman who brutally attacked Alexander after he tried to end their relationship.

The defense is expected to begin its case Jan. 29. If convicted, Arias could become the fourth woman on Arizona's death row.
