JJ's Great Adventure

Last year, a baby grey whale was found alone and sick on a California beach.

Scientists named her JJ and took her to an aquarium to get better. And, boy, did she grow. In a little over a year she got 15 feet longer and put on 17,000 pounds.

A few days ago, she was ready to go home.

"It was really sad," TK (possibly 'one of her caretakers') said.

Then JJ went by truck, then crane, and then boat, back to the Pacific Ocean.

Scientists had hoped to follow JJ's travels with radio transmitters, but she soon knocked them off. If all goes well, she'll meet up with other whales and swim north for the Spring.
