Jeweler To The Stars

If diamonds are indeed a girl's best friend, then the diamond designer can't be far behind. CBS 'This Morning' Entertainment Contributor Eleanor Mondale visited the glittering world of jeweler Martin Katz.

"From the beginning of time, man has been fascinated with gems, the magical spiritual element of the stones," says Katz. "It's inexplicable. You get around it, and you don't know what it is, but you want to touch it, you want to have it. They're really magical."

And when it is time to sparkle in the spotlight, the diamond doctor of Tinseltown knows how to find just the right jewel for the job.

"Sandra Bullock is very demure. She wants very simple, very quiet," Katz observes. "Salma Hayek wants to wear jewelry. So it's completely different things, but it's knowing their personality that helps me decide what I'm going to use."

The stars themselves respect Katz's knowledge.

"He makes everything individually and really knows everything about it and tells you the history of the pearls he uses, and he's just a wonderful wonderful designer," says ER star Julianna Margulies.

And right before the Oscars, his place is ultra-hot. People like Madonna and Sharon Stone can easily meet in the lobby.

"Nobody is ever on time," says the jeweler, "so when you stack appointments, of course, it's a collision. Sometimes there's cat fights. It's fun."

While celebrities showcase his creations, Katz says 90 percent of his business is more moderately priced.

His jewels are only on loan when celebrities wear them to big Hollywood events. That's why you might have seen Minnie Driver, James Cameron, and Linda Hamilton on their hands and knees on Oscar night.

They were picking up the ruby beads that had become unstrung from Driver's borrowed bracelet.
