Jets Cut Burger, Sign Norgard

The New York Jets cut starting guard Todd Burger on Monday and signed veteran free agent Erik Norgard.

Burger, 29, started every game for the Jets last season, but coach Bill Parcells never was entirely satisfied with his pass blocking. Burger was with the team just one season after playing for the Bears from 1994-97.

Norgard, 33, is entering his 11th NFL season. He played the previous 10 with the Oilers, although he appeared in just the 1998 season opener before winding up on injured reserve with a shoulder problem.

Norgard signed a three-year contract and is expected to challenge youngsters Doug Karczewski and Alex Bernstein for a starting spot.

The Jets also are unsettled at right guard, where incumbent Matt O'Dwyer is a free agent and is not expected to re-sign. The Jets probably will draft a guard next month.
