Jeff Daniels channels Will McAvoy character for rant on Trump and Clinton

"The Circus" examines chaotic 2016 presidential race 09:50

HBO's "The Newsroom" may have signed off for good in 2014, but that doesn't mean we can't still get a glimpse of how the show's cranky fictional newscaster, Will McAvoy, would handle this year's unprecedented presidential race -- thanks to series star Jeff Daniels, at least.

During a visit to Bloomberg Politics' "With All Due Respect," hosted by Mark Halperin and John Heilemann, Daniels obligingly brought McAvoy back to life with a scripted rant about Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton and the media attention Trump has been enjoying for months.

When asked, "What makes Donald Trump the best-case scenario for Hillary Clinton," piano music swells and suddenly we're in a scene reminiscent of the very first moments of "The Newsroom," thanks to writers Matt Negrin and Griffin Hammond, who also directed the segment.

Heilemann and Halperin are also co-hosts and executive producers -- along with Mark McKinnon -- of the Showtime political documentary series "The Circus: Inside the Greatest Political Show on Earth," which delves into the campaigns of the major presidential candidates.
