Jan. 20.: Clinton's Final Year Begins

Bill Clinton began his final year in office on Thursday. And he's all too aware of it, CBS News White House Correspondent Mark Knoller reports.

"I will certainly mark the day," Mr. Clinton told reporters.

If he is considered to be a political lame duck by some, Mr. Clinton himself says he plans to remain as invigorated as possible.

"I wish I didn't have to sleep at all for a year. I wish that God would give me the capacity to work for a year without sleep. That would make me very happy," the president said.

There is still another federal budget, many important legislative issues, and more than likely a slew of new presidential initititives - such as the health care plan annouced this week - in store.

But the clock seems to be ticking a bit faster these days.

On Jan. 20, 2001, Mr. Clinton will watch as the nation inaugurates a new chief executive. While the presidential outlook is uncertain at the moment with four major candidates still very much believing they have a shot at the White House, one thing is certain: The next president will not be William Jefferson Clinton.
