Jacko Turns Heads At The Zoo
A day after creating a worldwide sensation by briefly dangling his infant son from a hotel window, Michael Jackson took two of his children to the Berlin zoo. The kids were dressed in gauzy purple scarves that masked their faces.
The Gloved One wore dark glasses on the journey to the zoo with his two oldest children, Prince Michael, 5, and Paris, 4. The children giggled at the gorillas, though the scarves that covered their faces looked oddly incongruous for a zoo outing.
The singer's youngest child, 8-month-old Prince Michael Joseph II, remained at the hotel where Jackson is staying. The singer created a worldwide furor by briefly dangling the infant from the window of his fourth-floor room.
London and New York tabloids were particularly blistering, labeling Jackson a "Wacko" and a "Mad Bad Dad" — even demanding his arrest for reckless endangerment. Berlin prosecutors said no crime had been committed and they were not investigating.
Jackson, wearing a surgical mask, made fleeting appearances at the window on Thursday — throwing kisses, waving V for victory and thumping his hand over his heart. Fueling rumors that he was traveling with a double, a second man appeared at the window with a large white sheet over his head wearing an untucked red shirt and black trousers identical to Jackson's.
The public relations firm organizing Jackson's visit said he wanted to go shopping at KaDeWe, one of Europe's largest department stores, and visit Prussian ruler Frederick the Great's Sanssouci palace in Potsdam outside of Berlin — prompting small groups to wait at both sites. Officials at Sanssouci said they hadn't been informed of any Jackson visit and had made no special preparations.
Jackson is to receive a Bambi entertainment lifetime achievement award Thursday, the focal point of his visit.
